Will Arnett Explains the Origins of His Arrested Development Chicken Dance

Nearly every Bluth family member has his or her own version of the Chicken Dance on Arrested Development. (Jessica Walter told us she wanted Lucille’s to look tipsy.) But none is more iconic than Gob’s, the Patient Zero of Chicken Dances. It was first unleashed in season one’s “Staff Infection,” to taunt Buster into going on strike with the construction crew. “I remember reading that script and going, Uh, what is that?” Will Arnett told Vulture. “It just said, ‘Gob does his chicken dance.’” And then it was time to create a move that would rival Michael Jackson’s moonwalk in choreographic historical importance.

To decide what Gob’s bad impression of a chicken might be, Arnett consulted on set in 2003 with series executive producers Mitch Hurwitz and James Vallely. They all tried out different versions for each other. “Jimmy started doing a little bit, then Mitch got up and did some, and then I began trying things,” remembers Arnett. “Picture three grown men hopping around, working out what it would be … They were pitching this really taunting dance, but I wanted to give it this very sharp, almost roosterlike, chest-sticking-out mannerism, like a real macho bravado dance.” And how did clapping get introduced to the move? “Because I wanted it to be only sort of threatening.”

The dance, of course, is the opposite of threatening, and once Gob gets going, it escalates to a happy, stomping victory strut that Arnett says can’t be contained. “That’s exactly what happens! It starts with wanting to shame the other person, but I’ll tell you, once you start doing it, it’s so much fun to do that you’re immediately overtaken. The original motivation goes by the wayside as you enjoy the splendor of this freeing and intoxicating dance. It just fills you full of masculine energy.”

Been dealing with a lot of shit from people recently. Need to let those people go off, make mistakes and sort their shit out so they can stop dumping it on me!

I’ve got so many things to get organised…career-wise, health-wise, travel-wise, hobby-wise…So Much to Do, So Little Time.

However, I have hit a massive road block this week…

Managed to pull muscles in my lower back, neck and shoulder on the weekend. This has been devastating as I was planning to get a lot done this week (having a week off as I’m changing jobs) but have just lazed around unable to do anything.

I’m planning on hitting up the pool tomorrow, maybe hitting up the beach on Sunday or next week. I need to do something about this!! I hate being injured!!

Anyway, guess all I can do is stay positive!!

Putting together my killer denim vest! This has been a long-term project…what with changing jobs and saving for a car draining all my $$!

The patches I have so far are:

- Drum kit

- Wolf protection

- X-Files poster

I am still looking for many other patches/studs/different things to put on it…pretty much making a scrapbook of me as a vest.

My band Mirella’s Inferno had our EP Launch at Spectrum on Oxford St on friday night at the awesome event Eightby8ight!!

The event was a huge success (pre-sale tix sold out, and I’m pretty sure the tix sold out overall…) with a large portion of the crowd there to see us! We had a few technical issues, but I think we did pretty well for our first ‘real’ show!

Hi TUMBLR!!

I haven’t been on here for almost eight months! I’ve just been so super busy with life, but I really did miss having a blog and being able to indulge in the visual (and a little bit of aural) side of my creativity.

So what have I been up to?

1. My Recital.

I had my graduating recital in December last year, just a few days after my 21st birthday. It went alright, but I did quite a few things that I wish I could have changed really, but was unable to.

2. My 21st.

I really didn’t do much for my 21st, I was just waaaay too busy with my recital, so I went to Pancakes on the Rocks at the Rocks with family and Stevie. Got some awesome presents too!!

3. Christmas/Holiday period.

Once again I didn’t really get up to much, just lots and lots of work at Lock&Lock. Overworked and underpaid, selling people luxury homewares…just what I aspire to do in life mmhmm.

4. New year, new band!

I joined an awesome alternative electronica band called Mirella’s Inferno. We had a small warm up gig at the Valve Bar in Tempe, but since then we’ve had a few dramas with missing/stolen gear (including my drum pad!), dealing with people/venues, personal shit etc. But FINALLY we have an awesome show coming up friday week at Spectrum - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Eight-By-8ight/441440879257524 Eightby8ight!! Where I will be debuting our new Roland Octopad!

5. New jobs all round too!

Stevie found himself with a new job as well, which he enjoys A LOT more than being treated like shit in a crappy restaurant kitchen, and it’s super close to home which is great too! I quit working at Lock&Lock and found myself a good ol’ call centre job, so if you get charity calls and you live in Australia, listen up ‘cause it may be me haha.

6. Resparking old flames.

Yup. I’ve found my old loves again - reading and drawing - and have been indulging in them! Studying at AIM really drew a lot out of me, and since I’ve had a break, I’ve found that my creativity has flourished, and I finally have some time to look at what my teachers at AIM were teaching me with some detail!!

7. Extra Curricular…

So what else have I been involved in? Really just been going to a few house parties here and there, a couple of road trips to places e.g. Canberra, getting along to a couple of Manly Sea Eagles games (can’t wait for Brookie on friday!!), I’ve done a couple of freelance gigs here and there (like an awesome 60th Birthday Party on the Central Coast, in a mansion with water for a backyard, pool volleyball, two spiral staircases, and lotsa jammin’!), I had an interview with Universal Music Productions Group a few months ago for a music logging position (didn’t get it though, I was deemed too young!) and I had a stint for a while there going to the gym regularly with some friends, but after the hassle of changing jobs and getting sick, I decided why pay for exercise when I can run around the streets?!

I will also be getting some riding lessons soon, some driving lessons, some drumming lessons from some real slick cats(!), a car (soooo close!) and then maybe my own working cover band…that would be fun!

And…Stevie and I will hopefully be visiting Europe or the USA this time next year!! Yay!

Anyway. It’s great to be back!

Since I haven’t been on here for aaaages, I wanna say CONGRATS SNAKE on signing up to play for Manly Sea Eagles for four more years!

Also, I wish Wolfie the speediest recovery possible. Poor guy. Amazing footballer. Legend.

I can’t wait for my Snake tee to show up at home :) (and on that note, my crash cymbal is taking forever to show tooo >( but my ride did show up, and it’s beautiful! (Zildjian Armand :)))
